The Story of Argonne
Argonne was first known as Van Zile. It was named after Abraham Van Zile, who helped plan the area in 1888. A post office opened there a year later. The town's name changed to North Crandon in 1892. Later, in 1929, it became Argonne. This new name honored soldiers from World War I. It was named after the French Forest of Argonne, where important battles took place.
The town is on a train line that goes from Minneapolis to Sault Ste. Marie. This line was originally part of the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railroad. While this main line runs mostly east to west, another line branches off to the south at Wisconsin Junction. This junction is just west of Argonne. The southern line goes to Neenah. It was one of the last lines to use "mixed trains." These trains carried both goods (freight) and people (passengers). From the late 1960s to the 1980s, these trains didn't have special passenger cars. Instead, riders could travel in the Caboose, which is the last car on a freight train.
