The Witch's Dungeon Classic Movie Museum is a special place in Plainville, Connecticut, USA. It has a fantastic collection of figures that look just like classic movie monsters!
About the Museum
The museum is owned by Cortlandt Hull. He grew up in Bristol, Connecticut. Cortlandt is also related to famous actors! His great-uncle was Henry Hull, and Josephine Hull, known for the movie Arsenic and Old Lace, is also a relative.
How It Started
In 1966, Cortlandt's dad helped him build the museum. It looks like a Swiss chalet! At first, Cortlandt made life-size monster figures using materials like wax and papier-mâché. Later, he made even better, more accurate versions of these figures.
Visiting the Museum
The museum is open on weekend evenings all year round. It moved to a new spot at 103 East Main St, Plainville, CT 06062. This new location is bigger! Now, each monster figure has its own special background and props. The museum also has professional lighting designed by Bill Diamond, who has won an Emmy Award for his work.
Amazing Movie Figures
Many of the figures' heads are made from "life-casts" of the actual actors. This means they are super realistic! The backgrounds and clothes for the figures are also very true to the time period of the movies. Some of the costumes or props were even used in the original films!
Here are some of the famous characters you can see at the museum:
- Frankenstein's Monster (played by Boris Karloff)
- Erik, The Phantom Of The Opera (played by Lon Chaney Sr.)
- Zenobia, The Gypsy Witch (an original character, voiced by June Foray)
- The Abominable Dr. Phibes (played by Vincent Price)
- The Creature from the Black Lagoon (played by Ricou Browning)
- Count Dracula (played by Béla Lugosi)
- The Mole People
- Kharis, The Mummy (played by Lon Chaney Jr.)
- Professor Henry Jarrod (from House Of Wax, played by Vincent Price). One figure even wears the real suit Vincent Price wore in the movie!
- The Fly (played by David (Al) Hedison)
- Nosferatu, Count Orlok (played by Max Schreck)
- The Masque of the Red Death (from The Phantom of the Opera, played by Lon Chaney Sr.)
- Dr. Niemann (with Dracula's skeleton, from House of Frankenstein, played by Boris Karloff)
- The Beast (from La Belle et la Bête, played by Jean Marais)
- Maleficent (from Disney's Sleeping Beauty)
