Wix.com Ltd. (also known as Wix) is a company from Israel that helps people create websites. It's like a special online tool that lets you build a website using a "drag-and-drop" method. This means you can easily move things around on your screen, just like you're arranging digital building blocks. You don't need to know how to code!
Wix helps you make websites that work well on both computers and mobile phones. You can add many cool features to your website, like social media links, online shops, contact forms, and even places for people to chat. Wix offers a free version, but you can pay for extra features like connecting your own website address or removing Wix ads. As of May 2025, Wix is used by about 3.8% of all websites on the internet.

How Wix Started and Grew
Early Days and Growth
Wix was started in 2006 by three Israeli developers: Avishai Abrahami, Nadav Abrahami, and Giora Kaplan. Their main office is in Tel Aviv, Israel. Early on, the company received money from different investors to help it grow.
By April 2010, Wix had 3.5 million users. They received more funding to keep developing their platform. In March 2011, the number of users grew to 8.5 million. By August 2013, Wix had more than 34 million registered users around the world.
On November 5, 2013, Wix started selling its shares on the NASDAQ stock market. This helped the company raise about US$127 million. In 2016, Mark Tluszcz became the chairman of Wix's board of directors.
Recent Growth and Impact
In 2020, Wix's earnings increased a lot. This was partly because many businesses moved online during the COVID-19 pandemic. Wix added over 31 million new users in 2020, reaching nearly 197 million users by the end of that year. They also got over 1 million new paid subscriptions, earning more than US$1 billion in a year for the first time.
As of June 2024, Wix has grown even more, with over 260 million users worldwide.
How Wix Products Developed
Building the Platform
Wix first launched a test version of its website builder in 2007. Back then, it used a technology called Adobe Flash.
In June 2011, Wix added a special module for creating online stores on Facebook. This was their first step into helping people sell things through social media.
In March 2012, Wix launched a new and improved website builder using HTML5 technology. This made websites built with Wix work better and be more modern.
Adding New Features
In October 2012, Wix created an "app market." This is like an online store where users can find and add extra tools and features to their websites. Developers can also create their own apps and offer them to Wix users.
In August 2014, Wix launched "Wix Hotels." This is a special booking system for hotels, bed and breakfasts, and vacation rentals that use Wix websites.
In June 2016, Wix introduced Wix ADI, which stands for Artificial Design Intelligence. This smart tool uses artificial intelligence to help design websites almost automatically. It makes it even easier for people to create a professional-looking site.
Latest Innovations
In 2020, Wix launched another website builder called EditorX. This tool gave users more advanced design options, similar to what professional web designers use.
In July 2023, Wix announced that it was improving its ADI technology to create an even more powerful AI-powered website generator.
In October 2023, Wix launched the Wix Studio website builder. This platform was designed especially for agencies and professional web designers.
In March 2024, the new AI web builder was made available to everyone. It uses a chatbot to help users create content for their websites.
In March 2025, the digital publisher CNET named Wix the "Best overall website builder."
Companies Wix Has Bought
Wix has bought several other companies to add more features and services to its platform:
- In April 2014, Wix bought Appixia, a company that made apps for mobile shopping.
- In October 2014, they acquired OpenRest, which made online ordering systems for restaurants.
- In April 2015, Wix bought Moment.me, a tool for creating mobile websites for events.
- On February 23, 2017, Wix acquired DeviantArt, a large online community for artists, for US$36 million.
- In January 2017, the company acquired Flok, which provided tools for customer loyalty programs.
- In February 2020, Wix acquired Inkfrog, a company that helped eBay sellers manage their businesses.
- On March 2, 2021, Wix acquired SpeedETab, a company that provided online technology for restaurants.
- In May 2021, Wix acquired Rise.ai, which offered gift card and customer re-engagement tools for online brands.
- A month later, Wix acquired Modalyst, a platform for drop-shipping businesses.
- In May 2025, Wix acquired Hour One, a company specializing in AI-powered video creation. This helps Wix improve its own AI features.
- In June 2025, Wix acquired Base44, a company known for its artificial intelligence and conversational tools. Wix plans to add these features to its website and app building platform.
How Wix Works
Wix uses a "freemium" business model. This means you can create a basic website for free. If you want more advanced features, like using your own website address (like "yourname.com"), removing Wix ads, or having more storage space, you need to buy a premium package.
Wix offers many ready-made website designs called templates. You can customize these templates or start building your website from scratch using their drag-and-drop editor. This editor lets you add pictures, text, videos, and other elements easily. In October 2013, Wix also added a special editor to help you make sure your website looks great on mobile phones.
The Wix App Market has many free and paid apps. These apps can add features like photo feeds, blogging tools, music players, and email marketing. Developers who create these apps get 80% of the money from sales, and Wix gets 20%.
You can also add your own special code, called JavaScript, to Wix webpages using a tool called Velo API.
