Wiñay Wayna is an ancient Inca ruin found in Peru. Its name means "forever young" in the Quechua language. You might also see it spelled Huiñay Huayna. This amazing site sits high up on a steep hillside, looking down over the Urubamba River. It is about 2,650 meters (8,694 feet) above sea level.
Exploring Wiñay Wayna
This Inca ruin is a special place. It has different parts built into the mountain. There are houses both higher up and lower down the hill. These parts are connected by stone stairs. You can also see old fountain structures.
The Inca people were very clever farmers. They built special terraces for growing crops. These are like giant steps on the hillside. They are called andenes. You can still see these farming terraces above and below the houses at Wiñay Wayna.
A Stop on the Inca Trail
Wiñay Wayna is a famous spot along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Many hikers walk this trail to reach the ancient city of Machu Picchu. There is a campsite near the ruins with the same name. It is often the last place hikers stay overnight before finishing their journey.
