Woburn railway station is a train station that helps people travel around Woburn and Waiwhetu in Lower Hutt, New Zealand. It's part of the Hutt Valley section of the Wairarapa Line. The station is about 14.4 kilometers (9 miles) north of Wellington.
Woburn is also special because it's where the Gracefield Branch line splits off. This branch goes to the Hutt Railway Workshops, which are like a big garage for trains. Trains stopping at Woburn can take you to Wellington, Taita, and Upper Hutt. The station has an island platform, which means the platform is in the middle with train tracks on both sides.
A Look Back in Time
Woburn station was one of three new stations opened on May 26, 1927. Back then, it was part of the Hutt Valley Branch line. Later, from March 1, 1954, this route became the main way for trains to reach Upper Hutt and the Wairarapa region.
The station building at Woburn was rebuilt around 1955. This happened when the train lines were made electric. An older building from Waterloo station was even added to the Woburn station at that time.
Woburn used to be a place where you could switch between buses and trains. But in 1986, a study decided that Waterloo station was a better spot for this. Waterloo was closer to homes and shops. It also had more space for bus stops. So, a new transport hub opened at Waterloo on November 26, 1988.
In 1993, the Woburn station was damaged by a fire. It was then rebuilt in 1994. Before the fire, workers could control the train tracks from the station. After the fire, this system was too damaged to fix. Now, the track switches are changed by hand. The rebuilt station also got a covered waiting area for passengers.
