Wojciech Młynarski (born March 26, 1941 – died March 15, 2017) was a very important Polish artist. He was a talented poet, singer, and songwriter. He also worked as a translator and a director for plays.
Młynarski was well-known in Polish music. He was famous for his beautiful ballads and a style called sung poetry. This is where poems are set to music. He worked with many singers and comedy shows called cabarets. He wrote the words for more than 2,000 songs! He sang some of them himself. His songs won 25 "Karolinkas," which are top awards from the Polish Song Festival. This is Poland's most important song festival, held every year since 1963. He also composed music for some of his songs. Many people see him as a true icon of Polish culture.
Early Life and Education
Wojciech Młynarski was born in Warsaw, Poland, on March 26, 1941. He went to the Tomasz Zan High School in Pruszków. Later, in 1963, he graduated from Warsaw University. He studied the Polish language and finished with very high honors.
During his time at university, he started working with the Hybrydy student theatre. This was a place where students performed plays and comedy shows.
A Career in Music and Theatre
By the mid-1960s, Wojciech Młynarski became a well-known writer for many cabarets. Some of the most famous ones were the Dudek, Dreszczowiec, and Owca groups.
In the late 1960s, several of his songs became popular hits on Polish Television. Młynarski also became famous for translating songs and poems. He translated works from French and Russian artists. These included famous names like Jacques Brel, Georges Brassens, Gilbert Bécaud, and Vladimir Vysotsky.
For his amazing translations of French songs and poems, especially those by Jacques Brel, Charles Aznavour, and Georges Brassens, Młynarski received a special award from France. It was called the Legion of Honour (Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur). He also received several important Polish awards, including the Order of the White Eagle.
In the 1970s, Wojciech Młynarski wrote many operas and musicals. Some of his works include "Henryk VI na łowach," "Cień," and "Awantura w Recco." He also translated the words for famous musicals into Polish. These included Cabaret, Chicago, and Jesus Christ Superstar.
In 2013, the first Festival of Wojciech Młynarski's Songs was held in the city of Sopot. This festival celebrated his amazing musical works.
Wojciech Młynarski passed away on March 15, 2017, after being ill for a long time.
Family Life
Wojciech Młynarski was married to actress Adrianna Godlewska. They later divorced. They had three children together:
- Agata Młynarska (born 1965) is a well-known Polish TV journalist, director, and producer.
- Paulina Młynarska (born 1970) is also a journalist and an actress.
- Jan Młynarski (born 1979) is a musician.
Wojciech Młynarski was also related to other famous artists. He was related to Emil Młynarski, who was a Polish composer and started the Warsaw Philharmonic. He was also related to composer and painter Roman Orłow. Through marriage, he was connected to the famous pianist Arthur Rubinstein.
