Why is it Called Wolf Creek?
Many creeks in Oregon are named Wolf Creek. This is because wolves used to live in large numbers across the state. The community of Wolf Creek likely got its name from one of these creeks.
A Look at Wolf Creek's History
The Wolf Creek post office first opened in 1882. A year later, in 1883, a railroad station called "Almaden" was built in the same spot.
In 1888, the railroad station changed its name to "Wolf Creek" to match the post office. The post office itself was later renamed "Wolfcreek" in 1895 and kept that name until 1951.
The Famous Wolf Creek Tavern
Long before Wolf Creek had a post office, there was an inn called the "Six Bit House." This inn was on the Applegate Trail, a path used by pioneers. The first Six Bit House was probably built in 1853.
The inn changed hands and was rebuilt several times. The building you see today, known as the Wolf Creek Tavern, was built around 1883. It is a very important historical site.
The Wolf Creek Tavern is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is managed by the Oregon State Parks and Recreation Department as the Wolf Creek Inn State Heritage Site. It holds the record as the oldest hotel in Oregon that has been open continuously.
What is the Climate Like?
Wolf Creek has warm, dry summers. The average monthly temperatures do not go above 71.6 degrees Fahrenheit (22 degrees Celsius).
According to the Köppen climate classification system, Wolf Creek has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate. This type of climate is often shown as Csb on climate maps.
