Wolfgang Brezinka (born June 9, 1928 – died January 3, 2020) was an important German-Austrian expert in education. He taught as a professor at several universities. These included the University of Würzburg, Innsbruck, and Konstanz. He spent his life studying how people learn and how education works.

His Journey in Education

Wolfgang Brezinka studied hard to become an expert in education. He earned his first advanced degree, called a doctorate, in 1951 at the University of Innsbruck. He then completed his "habilitation" there in 1954. This allowed him to teach as a university professor.

He taught at the University of Würzburg from 1958 to 1959. Later, he taught at the University of Innsbruck (1960–1967) and the University of Konstanz (1967–1996). His research also took him to famous American universities like Columbia University and Harvard University.

Professor Brezinka was also a guest teacher in other countries. He taught in Italy in 1983 and 1990. He was a guest professor in Switzerland in 1984 and in South Africa in 1985. He was a strong supporter of what is called "scientific pedagogy." This means he believed in studying education using careful research and facts.

After he retired, he continued his research. He focused on the history of education in Austria. He published a large series of books about this topic.

Ideas About Education

In his book "Metatheory of Education," Brezinka explained that there are three main ways to think about education. These are:

  • Educational science: This is about studying education using scientific methods.
  • Philosophy of education: This looks at the deeper ideas and values behind education.
  • Practical pedagogy: This is about the actual methods and ways of teaching.

Wolfgang Brezinka's writings were very popular around the world. His books were translated into many languages. These included Chinese, English, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. This made him one of the most widely read education thinkers from the German-speaking world.

He had a traditional view on how to teach and raise children. In his scientific work, he was influenced by thinkers like Viktor Kraft and Karl Popper. They believed in using logic and evidence to understand the world.

His Family Life

Wolfgang Brezinka was married to Erika Brezinka. They had three children together: Christof, Veronika, and Thomas.
