The Wood Fountain is an awesome outdoor artwork located on the IUPUI campus. This campus is in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Wood Fountain was finished in 1995. It was designed by Singh Associates, a group from New York City. The main idea behind this artwork was to create "better places to live." It helps connect different areas of the campus.

What Does It Look Like?

The fountain is made of stone and shaped like a pyramid or a diamond. Water flows down its sides, making it a beautiful fountain. It sits on the IUPUI campus right next to New York Street. Brick pathways surround the fountain.

The artwork is very large, measuring 100 feet long on each of its four sides. It has four levels. There are also nine small dips along each side. Triangles are carved into the stone. These carvings help the water flow down to the bottom. At the front of the fountain, there is a bronze plaque. It says:

THE WOOD PLAZA DEDICATED JUNE 26, 1995 THIS PLAZA WAS NAMED IN GRATEFUL RECOGNITION OF THE SUPPORT OF BILLIE LOU & RICHARD D. WOOD

What Is It Made Of?

The Wood Fountain is built from stone. Water constantly flows over its surfaces. The area around the fountain is also part of the artwork. This includes the trees, bushes, and flowerbeds. Even the benches, made from limestone and granite, are part of the design. The walkways around the fountain are made of brick.

Where Is It Located?

The Wood Fountain is found at The Wood Plaza. This plaza is a popular spot on the IUPUI campus. Many fun events happen here, like the Indy Jazzfest. The fountain is located behind the University Library, along New York Street.

The Wood Plaza was named after Robert D. Wood and his wife, Billie Lou Wood. Robert D. Wood was a leader at a company called Eli Lilly. The plaza was designed to match the look of the University Library. In 1996, the Wood Plaza received an award. The local chapter of the American Institute of Architects gave it an "Achievement award." This award was for its design and how it improved the area in Marion County. This shows how important the Wood Plaza is to both the campus and the community.

The Student Legend

If you visit the IUPUI campus, you might hear a secret story about the fountain. Some students believe there's a hidden club for those who have climbed to the very top of the fountain. They say there's a secret message at the top with clues to find this club.

Other students think you just need to post a picture of yourself at the top of the fountain on social media. Then, the secret club will contact you!

Because of this fun student legend, climbing the fountain is not allowed. Students who try to climb it can get into serious trouble, like being suspended or even expelled from the campus.
