Woodbridge is a small community in San Joaquin County, California. It's known as a census-designated place, which means it's a special area counted by the government for population. Woodbridge is about 43 feet (13 meters) above sea level.

This community is located northwest of the city of Lodi. It sits right next to the Mokelumne River. Woodbridge is famous for being part of California's San Joaquin Valley winegrowing area.

History of Woodbridge

How Woodbridge Started

Woodbridge was founded in 1852 by two people: Jeremiah H. Woods and Alexander McQueen. They set up a ferry service to cross the Mokelumne River. This ferry helped create a new road between Stockton and Sacramento.

In 1858, they built a wooden bridge where the ferry used to be. This bridge became known as Woods' Bridge. That's how the community got its name!

Jeremiah H. Woods hoped Woodbridge would grow even bigger than Stockton. He even wanted to create a new county called Mokelumne County, with Woodbridge as its main town. However, in 1867, the railroad decided to build its tracks through nearby Lodi instead. This meant Lodi grew faster.

Woodbridge as an Education Center

Even though the railroad bypassed it, Woodbridge became a place for learning. Two schools opened their doors in 1879: the Woodbridge Seminary and San Joaquin Valley College. The college, however, closed in 1897 because fewer students were joining.
