Word Rescue is a fun and educational computer game. It was made by Karen Crowther from Redwood Games and released by Apogee Software in March 1992. Later, in 2015, it came out again on Steam. This new version worked on Windows and Mac computers. You could even play the original game with special 3D glasses for a cool effect!

Like many games from Apogee back then, Word Rescue has three different parts, called episodes. Only the first episode was free to play.

  • Episode 1 - Visit Gruzzleville and the Castle
  • Episode 2 - Explore GruzzleBad Caverns
  • Episode 3 - See the spooky Haunted House

You can still buy the full version of this game today. Word Rescue also has a follow-up game called Word Rescue Plus.

Story of the Game

The game's story is about some silly creatures called "The Gruzzles." These Gruzzles can't read, and they don't want anyone else to read either! So, they steal all the words right out of books.

You get to play as a boy or a girl. Your job is to help Benny Bookworm get all the stolen words back. You need to match each word with its correct meaning. Once you do, Benny can put the words back into the books so everyone can read again!

How to Play

Moving Around and Finding Words

In Word Rescue, you move around the screen like in a platform game. You jump and walk through different levels. Your main goal is to find words and match them with their pictures. These pictures are scattered all over the level.

You also need to be careful and avoid the Gruzzles and other dangers. If you touch a Gruzzle or a danger, you'll have to start the level over again. Once you match all seven words, Benny Bookworm magically turns your collected words into a special key. This key opens the door to the next level!

Dealing with Gruzzles

If you match a word with the wrong picture, a Gruzzle will pop up! To get rid of a Gruzzle, you press the Space bar. This makes Benny the Bookworm pour slime on them. You only have a limited amount of slime. But don't worry, you can get more slime by collecting slime buckets. You can also get more slime by completing the mystery word.

The Mystery Word

At the start of each level, one word is chosen to be the mystery word. The letters of this word are spread out around the level. If you collect these letters in the correct order, you get bonus points! You also get a full supply of slime.

You can earn more bonus points in other ways too. You get points for collecting books, sliming Gruzzles, and matching words with their pictures.

Difficulty Levels

The game has different difficulty levels. This means it can be easy or challenging, depending on what you choose.

  • Easy difficulty is great for younger players. There's only one Gruzzle in the whole level.
  • Hard difficulty is much tougher. It often has many Gruzzles, sometimes even more than the words you need to find! You also need to collect 20 books to reveal the mystery word. This makes the game a good challenge even for adults.
