Worthington Creek is a cool stream in West Virginia, United States. It's about 15.4 miles (24.8 km) long. This creek flows into the Little Kanawha River. From there, its water travels to the Ohio River and then all the way to the mighty Mississippi River! It helps drain an area of about 35 square miles (91 km2) around the city of Parkersburg.

Discovering Worthington Creek

Worthington Creek is a tributary, which means it's a smaller stream that flows into a larger river. It's an important part of the bigger watershed that eventually reaches the Mississippi River.

Where Does It Flow?

Worthington Creek is entirely located in northern Wood County. It starts about 1 mile (1.6 km) south of a town called Waverly. From there, it generally flows southwest. The creek ends in Parkersburg, where it joins the Little Kanawha River. This meeting point is about 1.9 miles (3.1 km) upstream from where the Little Kanawha River itself flows into the Ohio River.

What's Around the Creek?

The land around Worthington Creek is called its watershed. This is the area where all the rain and water eventually flow into the creek. Most of this watershed is covered by forests, about 68% of it! These are mostly deciduous trees, which means they lose their leaves in the fall.

About 23% of the land is used for agriculture and pasture (where animals graze). The remaining 9% is developed, meaning it has buildings, roads, and other human-made structures.

Another Name for the Creek

Sometimes, Worthington Creek is also known by another name: "Worthingtons Creek." This is according to the Geographic Names Information System, which keeps track of place names.
