The Story of Wyanet's Name
The history of Wyanet goes back to 1821. It officially became a village in 1854 and was incorporated in 1857. The community has had a few different names over the years!
Early Names of Wyanet
- "Center" (1821): This was the very first name. An Indian trader named Bulbona gave it this name.
- "Pond Creek" (1837): The village started to grow around a creek on its south side. People named it "Pond Creek" because of this. Ellis Mercer built a saw mill there, and Amos Leonard built the first flour mill.
- "Kingston" (1853): When the first railroad, the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific, was built here in 1853, the name changed to "Kingston." This was to honor Henry and Mary King, who donated the land for the railroad.
How Wyanet Got Its Current Name
The Chicago, Burlington, Quincy Railroad finished their rail line in 1855. At that time, they gave the village its current name: Wyanet.
