Wymbritseradeel (pronounced Wim-brit-suh-rah-deel) was a rural area in the Netherlands. It used to be its own local government, called a municipality. This area was part of the Friesland province.
The municipality of Wymbritseradeel existed from 1984 until 2011. Before that, a similar type of local government with the same name existed from the 1500s until 1984.

History of Wymbritseradeel
Wymbritseradeel was created from an older area called Waghenbrugghe. In the year 1500, many Frisian cities became independent. Because of this, several "grietenij" (an old type of municipality) were formed. Wymbritseradeel was one of them.
Its borders stayed the same for a very long time, until 1984. From 1625 to 1851, the leader of Wymbritseradeel lived in a special house called Epemastate. This house was in the village of IJsbrechtum.
Modern Municipality Formation
The modern municipality of Wymbritseradeel was created in January 1984. This happened as part of a big change in how local governments were organized in Friesland. The old Wymbritseradeel area joined with the area of IJlst. It also included parts of Doniawerstal and several villages. These villages were Greonterp, Koufurderrige, Smallebrugge, and Wonseradeel.
The town of IJlst (also known as Drylts in Frisian) became the main administrative center. This means the town hall and local government offices were located there.
Merging into Southwest Friesland
In 2011, Wymbritseradeel joined with other nearby municipalities. These were Bolsward, Nijefurd, Sneek, and Wûnseradiel. Together, they formed a new, larger municipality. This new municipality is called Southwest Friesland.
Official Names and Spelling
Since 1986, the official name of the municipality was Wymbritseradiel. This is the name in the Frisian language. However, the Dutch name Wymbritseradeel is sometimes used. People use it to talk about the older municipality that existed before 1984.
