X'unéi facts for kids
X'unéi, also spelled as X'unei and sometimes known as Juné, was an important leader of the Tlingit people. He lived in a place called Yakutat in the year 1791. A chief is like a main leader or head of a group of people.
X'unéi: A Tlingit Leader
In 1791, a Spanish group led by Alejandro Malaspina met Chief X'unéi in Yakutat. They knew him by the name Juné. The Tlingit people also remember X'unéi through their oral histories. These are stories passed down by speaking, from older generations to younger ones.
Leading His Clan
X'unéi was the head of a group called the L'ukwnax.ádi clan. A clan is like a large family group that shares a common ancestor. He was famous for leading his clan in a long and difficult conflict. This conflict was against another clan, the Gaanaxteidee, from a place called Klukwan.
Conflict with Chief Yeilxaak
The Gaanaxteidee clan was led by another strong chief named Yeilxaak. The conflict between X'unéi's L'ukwnax.ádi clan and Yeilxaak's Gaanaxteidee clan was a major event. Chief Yeilxaak died during this conflict in 1791.
