Xanthorrhoea minor subsp.lutea at Bunyip State Park in Victoria | |
Scientific classification |
Xanthorrhoea minor is a special kind of plant called a grasstree. It grows naturally in the southeastern parts of Australia. A Scottish botanist named Robert Brown was one of the first people to describe this plant.
About the Xanthorrhoea Minor Grasstree
This grasstree is unique because it does not grow a tall, woody trunk like some other grasstrees. Instead, its long, green leaves grow from stems that stay hidden underground. You can usually see its flowers blooming during the months of October and November.
Different Types of Xanthorrhoea Minor
Scientists have found two main types, or subspecies, of Xanthorrhoea minor:
- X. minor subsp. lutea: This type is found in South Australia and Victoria.
- X. minor subsp. minor: This type grows in New South Wales. It likes wet, poorly drained areas, such as swamps. You can find it around the Sydney Basin, stretching north to Gosford, west to Springwood, and south to Campbelltown.
