Saban's Xyber 9: New Dawn is an exciting animated TV show made by Bokabi and Saban Entertainment. It first aired on the Fox Kids network in the United States on September 25, 1999. Only 10 episodes were shown before it stopped airing on December 4, 1999. Later, the full series was shown in Ireland on RTÉ Two in 2001. Six years after that, it came back on Toon Disney as part of their Jetix lineup. This time, all 22 episodes were shown, from February 24 to April 8, 2007.

Story of Xyber 9

The show begins with an opening message: "A glorious world... falls. From the ashes rise... good, and evil. The times call for a hero! A hero to master the greatest power the world has ever known: Xyber 9!"

The story follows Jack, a brave 15-year-old orphan. He is chosen to be the hero for the people of Terrana, a futuristic world in the middle of a big war. Everyone relies on Jack to save their home. His main goal is to defeat Machestro, the evil ruler of the underworld. If Jack succeeds, he will become king.

Jack's most powerful weapon is a smart computer called Xyber 9. It looks like a staff and helps him fight evil. With Xyber 9's power, Jack travels through Machestro's underworld and other futuristic lands. He fights bad guys and gains more friends to help him. Machestro desperately tries to steal Xyber 9. Without it, Jack would be helpless. If Machestro got Xyber 9, he could spread his evil across Terrana and other worlds.

At the end of the show's first run, Jack finds a special valley. This valley was left by Terrana's ancient people. It has amazing crops that grow very fast and need little water. Jack shows these crops to his people to help Terrana recover.

It's also revealed that Machestro controls his followers, the Machina, by giving them false hope. He tells them they can take over the surface world by making it dark. The Machina have a virus that causes them great pain in sunlight. They believe sunlight will kill them because of a curse. However, Ikira, a former Machina, learned that sunlight is actually the cure for their infection. After enduring the pain, they can walk on the surface. Machestro knows this truth but keeps it a secret. He fears the Machina would remove him as their leader if they knew.

Main Characters

Heroes of Terrana

  • Jack (voiced by Jason Marsden) - A 15-year-old orphan who becomes the "Chosen One." He finds Xyber 9 and leads the fight against Machestro. Jack is brave and ready to fight, but sometimes he acts too quickly. He doesn't like being called "boy."
  • Xyber 9 (voiced by René Auberjonois) - The last "thinking machine" called a Xyber. He has his own thoughts and acts as Jack's powerful weapon. Xyber 9 often uses sarcasm but is usually the sensible voice for Jack. He doesn't like being used as a simple tool.
  • Anakonda (voiced by Nika Futterman) - Also known as Ana, she is a mysterious red-haired girl from the Dark Lands. Snakes raised her, and Jack gave her the nickname "Anakonda" because her real name was too long. She is very connected to nature and has sharp senses. Ana is a fierce warrior who often makes smart remarks. She also has feelings for Jack.
  • Ikira (voiced by Christopher Marquette) - A famous swordsman who joins Jack's team as a teacher. He used to be a Machina. He was cured of the Machina infection when he was tied to a rock in the sunlight as punishment.
  • Mick (voiced by Quinton Flynn) - A young man who loves big machines and pretty girls. He is confident and often jumps into situations if there's a chance for treasure. Mick can be cocky and a bit selfish, but he will help his friends when they are in danger.
  • Willy (voiced by Rodney Saulsberry) - Mick's tall and strong teammate. He is an excellent cook and skilled with many weapons. Willy is usually quiet, but when he speaks, it's often with good sense. He often tells Mick to calm down.
  • Queen Tatania (voiced by Dominique Jennings) - A brave leader who fights against King Renard. She forms an alliance with Jack after he saves her life. Even when Jack gets into trouble, she keeps faith in him.
  • Princess Roselyn (voiced by Jolie Jenkins) - King Renard's daughter. She seems to have feelings for Jack, and he for her. She didn't know about her father's evil actions at first. When she learned the truth, she decided to help save her kingdom.

Villains of Terrana

  • Machestro (voiced by Tony Jay) - The evil Machina who rules the underworld. He wants to take over Terrana. Like all Machina, sunlight hurts him, so he wears a special helmet to protect his face.
  • King Renard (voiced by Tim Curry) - He is loved by his followers but is secretly evil. He works with Machestro to steal Xyber 9 and conquer other worlds. Renard follows Machestro, hoping to become his main helper.

Other Important Characters

  • Honk (vocal effects by Frank Welker) - A strange creature that looks like a mix of a pig and a bulldog. Jack saved his life, and now Honk follows him. He tries to protect Jack but mostly just makes honking sounds.
  • Machina - A group of people who live underground. They wear full body suits and masks because sunlight causes them extreme pain. They believe they are cursed. However, Ikira discovered that sunlight is actually a cure if they can endure the pain. The Machina soldiers Machestro uses are called "Tunnel Rats."
