Ya'akov Nehoshtan (born April 22, 1925 – died April 17, 2019) was an important person in Israel's government. He was a politician, which means he helped make decisions for the country. He was also a diplomat, which means he represented Israel in other countries. He worked in the Knesset, which is like Israel's parliament, and later became an ambassador to the Netherlands.

Early Life and Education
Ya'akov Nehoshtan was born in Kazanlak, a town in Bulgaria, on April 22, 1925. He went to high school in a city called Vratsa. When he was younger, he was part of a youth group called Hashomer Hatzair.
In 1944, he moved to Mandatory Palestine. This was the name for the area that is now Israel, before it became an independent country. Moving to Israel is called making "aliyah". After he arrived, he studied law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He became a certified lawyer.
Joining the Irgun
In 1944, Ya'akov Nehoshtan joined a group called the Irgun. This was an underground group that worked to create an independent Jewish state. The British authorities were in charge of Palestine at that time. In 1945, the British arrested him. They sent him to a detention camp in Eritrea, a country in Africa. Later, in 1947, he was moved to another camp in Kenya.
Political Career
When Israel became a country in 1948, Ya'akov Nehoshtan helped start a political party called Herut. In 1968, he became the leader of the party's branch in Jerusalem.
The next year, in 1969, he was elected to the Knesset. The Knesset is Israel's parliament, where laws are made. He was part of a group called Gahal, which was an alliance of the Herut party and another party. He served in the Knesset until the elections in 1973, when he lost his seat.
Diplomatic Service
Ya'akov Nehoshtan also had an important career as a diplomat. In 1979, he worked at the Embassy of Israel in Washington, D.C. in the United States. He was a high-ranking official there.
Then, in 1982, he became the ambassador to the Netherlands. An ambassador is a country's main representative in another country. He held this important job until 1985.
Family and Later Life
Ya'akov Nehoshtan passed away on April 17, 2019, when he was 93 years old. His son, Ido Nehoshtan, also served his country. Ido became the commander of the Israeli Air Force, which is a very important role in Israel's military.
