Yangyang County (Yangyang-gun) is a special area in Gangwon Province, South Korea. It's located in the northeast part of the country. About 31,000 people lived there in 2004.

Yangyang's Airport Story

In 2002, Yangyang opened its own airport, called Yangyang International Airport. It was built to help tourists visit nearby cities like Gangneung and Sokcho. Many visitors wanted to see the amazing Seorak-san national park. However, not enough people used the airport. Because of this, it closed down in 2009.

A Place for Many Beliefs

Yangyang County is special because it brings together five major religions found in South Korea. These are Confucianism, Buddhism, Shamanism, Protestantism, and Roman Catholicism. You can find important sites for all these beliefs in Yangyang.

  • The Seonghwangsa is a traditional altar used for shamanistic ceremonies.
  • Yangyang Hyanggyo is a Confucian school built way back in 1340. Today, it's mostly a shrine, but some classes are still held there.
  • The Yangyang Cathedral was built in 1921. It was destroyed during the Korean War but was later rebuilt.

Yangyang is also proud of its traditional five-day market. It's the biggest market of its kind in the area. People know it for its fresh and high-quality products.
