Yasmin Benoit (born June 10, 1996) is a model from England. She is known for her work in alternative fashion and lingerie. Yasmin is also an important voice for people who identify as asexual and aromantic. She works to help others understand these identities.

Early Life and Education

Yasmin Benoit has family roots in Trinidad, Jamaica, and Barbados. She grew up in England. For her education, she attended Reading Girls' School and Padworth College. Later, she studied at St Mary's University, Twickenham and University College London.

Modeling Career

Yasmin started modeling when she was 16 years old. She chose to focus on alternative fashion. This was a unique path because the modeling world often prefers certain beauty standards.

Her first big break in modeling happened in 2015. She worked with a Scottish brand called CRMC. In March 2018, Yasmin also teamed up with Gothic Lamb. This is a gothic fashion brand owned by African-American designers.

Activism and Advocacy

Yasmin Benoit is a strong advocate for asexual and aromantic people. She has used her platform to raise awareness.

Speaking Out on Asexuality

Yasmin appeared in a BBC Three show about asexuality. However, she felt the show did not fully represent what asexuality means. She later shared her views in a Sky News show in February 2019.

When asked about being a lingerie model while being asexual, she explained to Sky News: "I'm literally here to show off the clothes and make it look good. I'm not trying to sell myself, I'm trying to sell a product." This idea led her to create the hashtag #ThisIsWhatAsexualityLooksLike in 2019. This hashtag helps show that asexual people come from all walks of life.

Writing and Public Speaking

Yasmin has written articles for publications like HuffPost UK. She has also given talks at many events and universities. These include the University of Cambridge, the UK Asexuality Conference in 2018, Reading Pride, and King's College London. She also spoke at National Student Pride.

Working with Organizations

In 2019, Yasmin worked with the Asexual Visibility and Education Network (AVEN). She also partnered with Budweiser and Revolt London. Together, they hosted the first bar at Pride in London focused on asexuality. In October of that year, she joined AVEN's board of directors.

In December 2019, Yasmin made history. She became the first openly asexual woman to appear on the cover of a UK magazine. This was for Attitude magazine's "The Activists" issue.

New Initiatives

In early 2020, Yasmin interviewed asexual people for England Unwrapped. This episode was heard on BBC Radio Berkshire and BBC Sounds. In 2021, she helped create International Asexuality Day, celebrated on April 6.

In 2022, Yasmin launched a special project. It is called the Stonewall x Yasmin Benoit Ace Project. She partnered with Stonewall, a well-known charity. This project works to support the rights of asexual people.

In June 2023, Yasmin achieved another milestone. She was the first openly asexual person to be a grand marshal for the NYC Pride March. This is a big honor in the LGBTQ+ community.

Consulting for TV

Yasmin was a consultant for the final season of Netflix's show Sex Education. She helped make sure the show's portrayal of asexual characters was accurate. However, she later shared her disappointment. Some scenes about an asexual character were changed or removed. These scenes were important for showing how different identities can connect.

Recognition and Awards

Yasmin Benoit has been recognized for her work in both modeling and activism.

In 2018, Aislin Magazine noted her importance. They wrote that she became "one of the UK's most prominent Black alternative models." This was especially significant in a part of modeling that was mostly White.

In 2021, Yasmin received an Attitude Pride Award. In 2022, she was nominated for a British LGBT Award. This was in the Online Influencer category. In the same year, she won Campaigner/Influencer of the Year. This award was given by the Bank of London Rainbow Honours.

Personal Life

Yasmin Benoit identifies as both asexual and aromantic. She shared this part of her identity in a video on YouTube in 2017.
