Yasuo Suzuki (鈴木 保男, Suzuki Yasuo, 30 April 1913 – ?) was a Japanese football player. He was a talented defender, a player whose main job is to stop the other team from scoring. Suzuki played for the Japan national team and was part of a famous Olympic team.

Playing for Clubs

Yasuo Suzuki was born in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, on April 30, 1913. He played football for a team called Waseda WMW. This team was made up of players and graduates from Waseda University, where he studied.

While playing for Waseda WMW, Suzuki played alongside many other players who also represented the Japan national team. Some of his famous teammates included Motoo Tatsuhara and Tadao Horie.

Playing for Japan

In May 1934, when Yasuo Suzuki was still a student at Waseda University, he was chosen to play for the Japan national team. This was for the 1934 Far Eastern Championship Games, which took place in Manila.

His first game, also known as his debut, was on May 15, 1934, against the Philippines.

The "Miracle of Berlin"

In 1936, Suzuki was again selected for the Japan team. This time, it was for the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany.

At these Olympics, Japan played their first match against Sweden. Japan made an amazing comeback to win this game. This was Japan's very first victory in football at the Olympics! This historic win against a strong team became known as the "Miracle of Berlin" (ベルリンの奇跡) in Japan.

In 2016, this special team was honored and chosen for the Japan Football Hall of Fame.

Suzuki's Olympic Games

Yasuo Suzuki did not play in the famous match against Sweden. However, he got to play in the next game against Italy. He played because his teammate, Tadao Horie, had broken his right arm.

Suzuki played a total of 2 games for the Japan national team before 1936.
