Yasushi Inoue (井上靖, Inoue Yasushi, May 6, 1907 – January 29, 1991) was a famous Japanese writer. He wrote many different kinds of stories, including poems, essays, short stories, and longer novels. He was born in Asahikawa, Hokkaido in 1907, but grew up in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.
Life and Career
Yasushi Inoue went to two universities: Kyushu University and Kyoto University. While studying, he was also a skilled judoka, which is a judo athlete. He even competed in the important Nanatei league. However, he decided to stop judo to focus on his writing.
He became well-known for his serious historical fiction stories. These stories were often about ancient Japan and other parts of Asia. Some of his famous historical novels include Wind and Waves, Tun-huang, and Confucius.
Inoue also wrote novels and short stories that were a bit like his own life. These are called semi-autobiographical. Examples are Shirobamba and Asunaro Monogatari. These stories often showed what life was like in Japan when he was growing up in the early to mid-20th century.
A writer named Leon Picon wrote about Inoue in 1965. He said that Inoue started writing novels a bit later in life, when he was 42. In 1949, he published his first two short novels, Ryoju and The Bullfight. The next year, he won a top Japanese literary award, the Akutagawa Prize, for these works.
Inoue was known for doing a lot of research for his stories. He made sure his historical novels were very accurate and detailed. Sometimes, the characters in his stories were even based on real people from history.

Yasushi Inoue won several important awards for his writing:

- 1957 Ministry of Education Prize for Literature for The Roof Tile of Tempyo
