The Central Plaza and Its Church
The main square, also known as the central plaza, is a lively spot. People gather here for fun events or just to hang out from morning until night. Old Spanish laws from the early 1800s, called the Laws of the Indies, said that plazas should be big enough for celebrations. These laws also suggested that nearby streets should have covered walkways. This would protect people from the sun and rain.
The Catholic Church in Yauco
Right across from the central plaza in Yauco barrio-pueblo is the Parroquia Santísimo Rosario. This Roman Catholic church opened in 1934. Before this church, two other churches stood in the same spot. The very first church was made of wood in 1754 and was used until 1848. A new church was built in 1849. It was taken down in 1930 to make space for the church you see there today.
History of Yauco Barrio-Pueblo
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the United States. In 1899, the United States Department of War counted the people in Puerto Rico. They found that 6,108 people lived in the Pueblo barrio at that time.
