Yeadon is a small town, called a borough, located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It is right next to the big city of Philadelphia. In 2010, about 11,443 people lived there.

Yeadon's Location and Size

Yeadon is found in the eastern part of Delaware County. It shares borders with several other towns. To the south is Darby. To the northwest is Lansdowne. On its west and north sides is Upper Darby Township. To the east, across a stream called Cobbs Creek, is the city of Philadelphia. Philadelphia's downtown area is about 6 miles (10 km) to the east.

The U.S. Census Bureau says that Yeadon covers a total area of about 1.6 square miles (4.1 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

A Brief Look at Yeadon's History

Yeadon and the land around it were once part of a place called New Sweden. This was a Swedish settlement known as Mölndal, founded in 1645. The borough of Yeadon got its name from Yeadon Manor. This manor was named after a town called Yeadon, West Yorkshire, in England.

After World War II, many middle-class African American families moved to Yeadon. In 1959, the town's Nile Swim Club became very important. It was the first swim club in the United States that was owned and run by African Americans.

Many interesting people have connections to Yeadon:

  • George Ronald Christmas: A Marine officer from Philadelphia who won important awards.
  • William T. Kerr: He lived in Yeadon and started the American Flag Day Association in 1888. He worked for 50 years to make Flag Day a national holiday. He was there when President Harry S. Truman signed the law in 1949.
  • Rose Coyle: She was crowned Miss America in 1936. She lived in Yeadon and is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery.
  • John McDermott: He was the first golfer born in the U.S. to win the U.S. Open. He lived in Yeadon and is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery.
  • Tony Taylor: A baseball player who played second base for the Philadelphia Phillies in the 1960s and 1970s.

In 2013, St. Louis Church joined with Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Darby, and the St. Louis parish closed.

U.S. Route 13 is the main highway that goes through Yeadon. It runs generally from the southwest to the northeast. This route uses different streets like MacDade Boulevard, Church Lane, and Baltimore Avenue as it passes through the town.
