Yehia Chahine was a famous Egyptian actor.

Yehia Chahine (born July 28, 1917 – died March 18, 1994) was an Egyptian film producer and actor. He worked in both films and theatre. He is best known for playing a main character in the movies based on the Cairo Trilogy. This famous book series was written by Naguib Mahfouz, an Egyptian author who won the Nobel Prize.

His Early Life and Career

Yehia Chahine was born in Imbaba, a town in Giza, Egypt. His father also had the name Yehia Chahine. Yehia studied performing arts and earned a special diploma. After finishing his studies, he began acting in plays. His first play was called Murtafa`t wa Darag, which means Heights and Stairs. In 1935, he started his film career by acting in his very first movie.

Famous Film Roles

Yehia Chahine acted in many movies. However, his most famous role was playing Al-Sayyid Ahmad Abd al-Jawad. This character was a strong family leader from Cairo. He played this role in the Cairo Trilogy films.

There were three films in this series:

  • Bayn al-Qasrayn (Palace Walk) came out in 1964. It was based on the novel Palace Walk.
  • Qasr al-Shawq (Palace of Desire) was released in 1967.
  • Al-Sukkariya (Sugar Street) came out in 1973.

These movies were set in Cairo. They followed the Abd al-Jawwad family through three generations. The stories covered the time from World War I up to the year 1952. In 1952, King Farouk was removed from power in Egypt. These films were very popular and successful in Egypt and other Arab countries.

Yehia Chahine also starred in many other successful films:

  • In 1951, he acted with Faten Hamama in Ibn al-Nile (Son of the Nile). This movie was directed by Youssef Chahine.
  • He played a main role in the 1954 film Gaalouni Mujriman (I Have Been Made a Murderer). This movie was also based on a novel by Naguib Mahfouz.
  • In 1957, he starred in La Anam (Sleepless). This film was chosen as one of the top 150 Egyptian movies ever made.
  • His last film role was in 1988. It was in a movie called Kul Hatha al-Hub (All this Love).

Awards and Later Life

Yehia Chahine received several awards for his acting in films. In 1993, he was given the Sciences and Arts prize. He passed away on March 18, 1994, when he was 76 years old.
