The yellow-bellied flyrobin (Cryptomicroeca flaviventris) is a small, interesting bird. It belongs to the Australasian robin family, called Petroicidae. This bird is special because it's the only species in its group, the genus Cryptomicroeca.
You can only find the yellow-bellied flyrobin in New Caledonia, a beautiful island country. It lives on the main island, Grande Terre. These birds are quite adaptable! They live in many different places, from dry lowlands and woodlands to forests with Pinus trees or Pandanus plants. They can even be found in humid forests, from sea level all the way up to about 1,525 meters (5,000 feet) high.
How Scientists Name This Bird
Scientists give every animal a special two-part name, like a first and last name. This helps everyone know exactly which animal they are talking about. The yellow-bellied flyrobin's scientific name is Cryptomicroeca flaviventris.
For a long time, this bird was thought to be part of a group called Eopsaltria, which includes other yellow robins. But scientists use genetic studies (looking at DNA) to understand how animals are related. In 2009, a study showed that this bird was actually more closely related to a different group, the flyrobins in the genus Microeca. So, its common name changed from yellow-bellied robin to yellow-bellied flyrobin.
Later, in 2011, an even bigger genetic study looked at the whole Petroicidae family. This study found that the yellow-bellied flyrobin was quite different from the other Microeca birds. It was like a unique branch on the family tree. Because of this, in 2012, scientists created a brand new genus just for it: Cryptomicroeca. Now, it's the only species in this special group!
What Does It Look Like?
The yellow-bellied flyrobin is a medium-sized bird for an Australasian robin. It's about 14 to 15 centimeters (5.5 to 6 inches) long. It weighs around 12 grams (0.4 ounces), which is about as much as two quarters!
Its plumage (feathers) looks a bit like other birds in the Eopsaltria group. Its back, tail, and wings are a dark olive-grey color. Its head and chest are grey, with a slightly lighter color on its throat. The most noticeable part is its bright yellow belly and rump (the area above its tail). Its legs are also grey.
