Yewed is a very small place in Alfalfa County, Oklahoma, United States. It is known as an unincorporated community. This means it does not have its own local government, like a city or town does. Yewed is located about 0.7 miles (1.1 km) east of a place called Lambert.
A Look Back at Yewed's History
Yewed was first planned out and mapped in 1902. It became a stop along an old train line. This railway was called the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway.
How Yewed Got Its Name
The people living in Yewed wanted to open a Post Office. They asked for the name Dewey. They wanted to honor a famous naval officer, Admiral George Dewey. But there was already another town in Oklahoma named Dewey, Oklahoma. So, the Post Office officials suggested a new name. They simply reversed the letters of "Dewey" to create Yewed. The Post Office in Yewed was open for many years. It operated from December 24, 1898, until April 30, 1952.
Yewed in Recent Times
By 1977, Yewed was a very quiet place. It still had a working grain elevator. A grain elevator is a tall building used to store grain. At that time, only two people lived in the community.
