History of Dewey
How Dewey Began
Dewey started in 1899 when a man named Jacob Bartles moved his grist mill and trading post about three miles north. He moved them to land he owned near the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. A grist mill is a place where grain is ground into flour. A trading post is a store where people can trade goods.
Early Developments
In 1900, Jacob Bartles built the Dewey Hotel. The town was named after Admiral George Dewey, a famous naval officer. The first newspaper in town, called the Dewey Eagle, also started in 1900. In 1903, the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad came to Dewey, which helped the town grow. Dewey officially became a city on December 8, 1905.
