Early Life and Education
Yiruma was born in Seoul, South Korea. He started playing the piano when he was just five years old. Later, he moved to the United Kingdom to continue his music studies.
He attended the Purcell School for Young Musicians, a special school for talented young musicians. After that, he went to King's College London, where he studied music composition.
Music Career Highlights
After finishing his studies, Yiruma returned to South Korea. In 2001, he released his first album, called Love Scene. He quickly became well-known when his song "When Love Falls" was used in a very popular TV drama called Winter Sonata.
This made many people interested in his music. He held his first solo concert in April 2002. Yiruma also composed music for the animated movie Doggy Poo. He played piano versions of songs for another popular drama, Spring Waltz.
Return to Music and Global Success
After completing his military service, Yiruma made a big comeback. He went on a tour across twenty different cities in South Korea. Famous singers like Kim Bum-soo and Lee Hyun-woo joined him as guest performers.
In 2009, he became a DJ for a radio show called Yiruma's Music from All Around the World on KBS Classic FM. His music became even more popular around 2020. This was partly because many people were staying home during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns.
Videos of his songs, like "River Flows in You," gained millions of views on YouTube. In July 2020, his album The Best: Reminiscent, 10th Anniversary reached number one on the Billboard classical charts.
TV Shows and Legal Matters
From 2010 to 2011, Yiruma co-hosted a music TV show called Wednesday Art Stage on MBC. He hosted it with singer Bobby Kim. People were surprised by this duo because their music styles were very different. However, their honest and natural way of hosting won over audiences. They returned to host the show again in 2013 when it was brought back as TV Art Stage.
Yiruma had a disagreement with his former music company, Stomp Music, about how much he was paid. He took legal action to resolve this. In April 2024, the Supreme Court decided that the company needed to pay Yiruma his share of the profits.
Personal Life
Yiruma used to be a British citizen. However, he gave up his British citizenship to complete his mandatory military service in South Korea. He joined the Republic of Korea Navy in July 2006 and worked in public relations. He finished his service in August 2008.
In April 2007, Yiruma married Son Hye-im. She is the older sister of actress and former Miss Korea contestant Son Tae-young. In 2008, Yiruma and Son Hye-im welcomed their daughter.
