Yonhy Lescano Ancieta (born February 15, 1959) is a Peruvian lawyer and politician. He belongs to the Popular Action political party.

Mr. Lescano served as a Congressman in Peru from 2001 until 2019. A Congressman is someone elected by the people to represent them and make laws for the country. In 2019, the Congress was dissolved by then-President Martín Vizcarra, which meant it stopped working for a period. From 2009 to 2011, he was also the national secretary-general for his party. In the 2021 general election, he ran for president of Peru and finished in fifth place among many candidates.

Education and Early Career

Yonhy Lescano studied law at the Catholic University of Santa María in Arequipa, Peru, from 1976 to 1980. After finishing his studies, he worked as an independent lawyer in his hometown of Puno from 1984 to 2001. During this time, he also taught law at the National University of the Altiplano (UNA) in Puno, from 1985 to 2001.

Political Journey

Becoming a Congressman

Yonhy Lescano first tried to become a Congressman in the 2000 elections but was not successful. However, in the 2001 elections, he was elected to represent the Puno Region as a Congressman for the Popular Action party.

He was re-elected several times:

  • In 2006, as part of a group of parties called the Center Front.
  • In 2011, as part of the Possible Peru Alliance, this time representing the area of Lima.
  • In 2016, for his final term.

His time in Congress ended in 2019 when the Congress was dissolved by President Martín Vizcarra. Mr. Lescano supported this decision. He also disagreed with a report from a special commission in 2018, saying it wasn't fair because some members of the commission were also being investigated.

Leading His Party

Mr. Lescano was the General Secretary of the Popular Action party from 2009 to 2011. This role involves helping to lead and organize the party.

Running for President

In the 2021 general election, Yonhy Lescano became his party's candidate for President of Peru. He won the nomination by getting more than 63% of the votes within his party.

During the presidential campaign, he participated in a live debate with other candidates. In one discussion, he talked with another candidate, Verónika Mendoza, about who was part of their political groups. Mr. Lescano was considered one of the leading candidates in the race.

While visiting the city of Tacna, Mr. Lescano said that if he became president, he would ask Chile to return a historic ship called the Monitor Huascar. A Chilean mayor, Henry Campos, responded by saying the ship would not be moved from their coast.

After President Vizcarra was removed from office in November 2020, Mr. Lescano strongly criticized the new president, Manuel Merino. He did not agree with how Vizcarra was removed or Merino's role. In the end, Mr. Lescano finished fifth in the presidential election, which had many candidates.

Beliefs and Ideas

Yonhy Lescano is often described as having political views that are a mix of ideas. He is seen as being somewhat progressive when it comes to the economy, meaning he supports changes that help people economically. He has suggested a "social market economy" for Peru, which means respecting private businesses but also having the government step in to prevent unfair practices. He has also spoken against very large mining companies in Peru and suggested that the country's natural resources should be controlled by the nation.

On social issues, he is considered more conservative. He sometimes disagreed with his own party's decisions, like when he supported President Vizcarra's decision to dissolve Congress in 2019.

Personal Life

While studying in Chile, Yonhy Lescano met Patricia Contador Durán, who is also a lawyer. They got married and have three children together.
