About Yotam Solomon
Early Life and Education
Yotam Solomon's grandparents moved to Israel from Austria and Hungary after a very difficult time in Europe. Yotam grew up in Israel with his parents. He loved art and went to art school when he was a teenager.
He was also very talented at playing the viola from a young age. In 2003, Yotam moved to Los Angeles. He went to Beverly Hills High School and later graduated from Santa Susana High School. There, he won the National Orchestra Award in 2005 for his musical skills.
After high school, Yotam studied Fashion Design at FIDM, a famous fashion school. He graduated with high honors. After school, he got a job making patterns for a men's clothing brand. This job gave him the idea to start his own fashion label.
Starting His Fashion Career
Yotam showed his first collection in October 2007. It was for Spring-Summer 2008 and included both clothes and shoes. He presented it during LA Fashion Week. Since then, Yotam has shown many successful collections at fashion weeks in Los Angeles and New York City.
Yotam also loves art and believes it connects with fashion. In 2010, he talked about how artists and designers inspire each other. He said that what artists create can influence designers, and what designers do can influence artists.
Yotam's Fashion Work
His Own Brand
Yotam Solomon started his own fashion brand, named YOTAM SOLOMON, in July 2007.
In 2009, he was chosen for a special event during New York Fashion's Night Out. He worked with Design Within Reach and Preston Lee from Bravo's Top Design. They celebrated how fashion and interior design can work together. That same year, AOL's Stylelist called him "L.A.'s Top Young Designer."
For his Spring-Summer 2009 show, Yotam found inspiration in swimming pools. Los Angeles has many famous pools, like those at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Pools have different colors, shapes, and even plants or fish. Yotam wanted to show the beauty of pools in his designs. He turned the shimmering colors and shapes into wearable art.
Special Collections and Collaborations
In March 2010, Yotam Solomon showed his Fall 2010 collection. It was called the Native American Collection.
Later in 2010, Yotam celebrated Earth Day in a unique way. He showed a collection of "living dresses." These dresses were part of the Dasani Plant Model Fashion Show. This event celebrated Coca-Cola and Dasani's new plant-based bottle. The show took place on an outdoor runway in Los Angeles.
In May 2010, Yotam became a spokesperson for LG Electronics. He joined Victoria Beckham and Eva Longoria to promote different phones. Victoria Beckham chose him to create a special clothing line. This line was inspired by the LG Lotus Elite phone. Yotam also appeared with her in a TV commercial on MTV.
In September 2010, Yotam created a collection inspired by the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. He wanted to raise awareness and money to help. The media and fashion world praised him for "cleaning it up" with his designs.
In Fall 2010, Yotam Solomon also launched a more affordable shoe line. It was called YOTAM SOLOMON II.
Sustainable and Innovative Fashion
In March 2012, Yotam took part in a fashion fundraiser called Attire to Inspire. This event helped BREATHE LA.
Yotam Solomon also started REVOterial. This company focuses on creating new, eco-friendly materials for fashion. Their goal is to make products that can be reused or recycled easily. In 2014, Yotam Solomon joined the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator. This is a place that helps new green technology companies grow.
In 2019, Yotam Solomon became the creative director and co-founder of Covalent AirCarbon at Newlight Technologies. He created a collection using AirCarbon. This material is made from methane captured from the air. AirCarbon can be shaped in many ways to create fashion and lifestyle products.
One product was the Penrose clutch, a versatile bag with a special strap design. It also had a digital record that tracked its entire journey, from creation to end-of-life. This was part of the "Gen Alpha" collection. This collection was the first to be "carbon-negative," meaning it removed more carbon from the air than it produced.
Another item in the collection was the Poppy tote. This unisex bag was made with AirCarbon vegan leather. Its design was inspired by the California poppy flower. Each product in this collection had a laser-printed "carbon date." This date linked to a digital record that tracked the product's full life-cycle.
In January 2024, Solomon launched Virtue. This is a fashion brand for everyone, no matter their gender. Virtue aims to encourage honest conversations. Their main product for 2024 is the strap briefs. These are genderless briefs with a reimagined jockstrap design. Yotam Solomon worked with artist Clara Panainte to create drawings showing how the straps can be worn. The Guardian newspaper highlighted Virtue as a brand leading the way in genderless and sustainable fashion. This shows Yotam's focus on new ideas and being responsible in the fashion world.
In November 2024, Solomon led Virtue's "Free Your Cheeks" campaign. This event happened on Election Day and was featured in VICE. The campaign used Virtue's strap briefs to celebrate freedom and self-expression. It also encouraged people to participate in voting. This bold project showed Yotam's role as a designer who connects fashion with important social topics. He challenges old ideas and promotes inclusivity.
