"You'll Be in My Heart" is a famous song by Phil Collins. It was created for the 1999 Disney animated feature film Tarzan. The song is featured on the movie's soundtrack, Tarzan: An Original Walt Disney Records Soundtrack, and other Disney music collections. A special version of the song, sung by Phil Collins and Glenn Close, also appears on the soundtrack.

A very early version of the song, where Collins plays piano and sings, is a bonus feature on the Tarzan 2-DVD Special Edition. This demo helped create other songs from the movie like "Strangers Like Me" and "Son of Man". The official music video for "You'll Be in My Heart" was directed by Kevin Godley. Phil Collins also recorded this song in several other languages, including French, German, Italian, and Spanish.

How the Song Was Made

Disney first hired Phil Collins in 1995 to write songs for the Tarzan movie. The movie's directors, Kevin Lima and Chris Buck, wanted a strong jungle beat for Tarzan's adventures. Since Collins was a famous drummer for the band Genesis, he was a great choice.

Unlike most Disney movies, the characters in Tarzan do not sing the songs themselves. Instead, Phil Collins performs all the songs, acting like a narrator for the story. This decision allowed Collins, a popular artist, to write and record five original songs for the film. "You'll Be in My Heart" is one of these original songs, and Collins also performed it.

The Song's Meaning in Tarzan

The song was originally a lullaby Phil Collins wrote for his own daughter, Lily. In the movie, the song is sung by Tarzan's adoptive gorilla mother, Kala. She sings it to baby Tarzan to comfort him, promising to protect him and keep him safe. The main message of the song is that "love is a bond that cannot be broken," no matter how different two people might seem.

In the movie, only the first part of the song is played during this scene. The full version on the soundtrack explains that others might not understand why a mother and child who look so different can love each other so much. It also tells the child to be strong, even if the parent isn't always there. "You'll Be in My Heart" is one of only two songs in Disney's Tarzan where a character actually sings a part. The rest of the songs are performed by Collins and played over the movie scenes. The complete song is played during the end credits.

In the 2006 stage musical version of Tarzan, Kala performs "You'll Be in My Heart" with other performers. A part of the song is sung again by Kala and Tarzan when Tarzan decides to join the human world. This change was made so the songs would fit better with a live stage show.

Singing in Other Languages

Phil Collins recorded the entire Tarzan soundtrack, including "You'll Be in My Heart," in several languages. These include German, French, Spanish, and Italian. Even though most international versions of the movie played the English song during the end credits, Collins' full Spanish version of "You'll Be in My Heart" was very popular. It even reached number 32 on Billboard's Hot Latin Tracks chart. He also performed the German version on German TV.

Song's Success on Music Charts

"You'll Be in My Heart" was a very successful song. It stayed at number one on the Adult Contemporary charts for nineteen weeks. This was the longest time any song had been number one on that chart up to that point. The song also reached number 21 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was Phil Collins' first song to reach the top 40 since 1994 and his last top 40 hit to date. In the UK Singles Chart, the song reached number 17, continuing his success there.
