The Story of Youm7

How Youm7 Started

Youm7 began as a weekly newspaper in October 2008. It became a daily newspaper on May 31, 2011. The editor, Khaled Salah, said that Youm7 wants to support the idea of a fair and open government. He also said the paper would share facts with readers without being biased. It aims to show many different points of view.

Many people in Egypt visit Youm7s website. About 59% of its website visitors are from Egypt. These visitors often have a higher income and have finished college. They also tend to be women who browse from home. In 2012, Youm7s online version was the sixth most-visited website in Egypt. In 2014, the newspaper launched a new website called Photo7. This site shares pictures from Egypt and the wider Arab world.

In 2020, Youm7 was named the second most important Arabic newspaper.

Who Owns Youm7?

As of 2020, Youm7 was owned by a company called Egyptian Media Group. This group is part of a larger company called United Media Services Group. This larger group is connected to some of Egypt's government intelligence agencies.

The Cairo Post: News in English

On October 6, 2013, Youm7 started an English-language website called The Cairo Post. Sallie Pisch was in charge of this new website. She had also led a short-lived English version of Youm7 in 2011.

When the website launched, Pisch wrote that The Cairo Post wanted to show Egypt as it truly is. The goal was to help people watching Egypt understand all its complex parts. By November 2013, the website was publishing about 200 stories every day. These stories included new content, articles translated from Youm7's Arabic site, and news from other agencies.

Youm7 English Edition

Before The Cairo Post, Youm7 launched another English version on August 8, 2011. This was called Youm7 English Edition. The managing director, Sallie Pisch, said it aimed to provide good, easy-to-understand news from Egypt in English.

Youm7 English Edition also had an Egypt Wiki. This wiki aimed to give background information on Egyptian politicians and public figures. However, by May 2, 2012, the Youm7 English Edition website stopped working. Its link redirected to the Arabic Youm7 site. The last tweet from its Twitter profile was on December 21, 2012.

How Youm7 Covers Politics

After the 2011 Egyptian Revolution, some people had different opinions about Youm7's news coverage. Some online activists in Egypt even said the paper was making up news. They asked people on Twitter to stop following accounts linked to the newspaper.
