The Beaked Yucca (scientific name: Yucca rostrata) is a unique plant that looks a bit like a small tree. It belongs to the Yucca family. This plant naturally grows in parts of Texas in the United States, and in the Mexican states of Chihuahua and Coahuila.

The Beaked Yucca can grow a tall, strong trunk, reaching up to 4.5 meters (about 15 feet) high. At the very top of this trunk, it has a beautiful crown of leaves. These leaves are long and thin, growing up to 60 centimeters (about 2 feet) in length. They are also quite stiff and end in a sharp point. Even though they are long, they are usually less than 15 millimeters (about half an inch) wide.

When it's time to bloom, the Beaked Yucca grows a very tall flower stalk, called an inflorescence. This stalk can reach 100 centimeters (about 3 feet) tall and is covered with many pretty white flowers.

Growing Beaked Yucca Plants

The Beaked Yucca is one of the toughest types of yucca plants that grow a trunk. This means it can survive in many different climates. People often plant it in their gardens and yards, especially in the Southwestern United States. It can even grow well in places where winter temperatures drop quite low, down to USDA hardiness zone 5.

You can often see these tree-like plants growing in cities like El Paso, Texas, Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Denver, Colorado. They are popular because they are beautiful and easy to care for.

Special Types of Beaked Yucca

Plant growers have created some special versions of the Beaked Yucca. These are called cultivars.

  • Sapphire Skies: This special type of Beaked Yucca has leaves that are a lovely powder blue color.
