Yuenyeung (pronounced "yuen-yeung") is a super popular drink from Hong Kong. It's a special mix of coffee and tea! People often call it "coffee with tea."
Imagine mixing your favorite coffee with delicious Hong Kong-style milk tea. That's Yuenyeung! Usually, it's made with three parts coffee and seven parts milk tea. You can enjoy it hot or cold, depending on what you like. How it's made can be a little different from place to place.
This unique drink first became popular at outdoor food stalls called dai pai dongs and cozy cafes known as cha chaan tengs. Now, you can find Yuenyeung in many different restaurants all over Hong Kong.

Why Is It Called Yuenyeung?
The name "Yuenyeung" comes from mandarin ducks. These beautiful birds are called yuanyang in Chinese. Mandarin ducks are a symbol of love in Chinese culture. This is because the male and female ducks look very different, but they usually stay together in pairs.
Just like the ducks, the Yuenyeung drink mixes two very different things: coffee and tea. Even though they are different, they go together perfectly in this tasty drink!
Where Did Yuenyeung Come From?
A famous restaurant in Hong Kong, called Lan Fong Yuen, says it invented Yuenyeung. The owner, Mr. Lam, supposedly created it in 1952. This restaurant also claims to have invented "silk-stocking milk tea," another popular Hong Kong drink. While the story about Yuenyeung isn't officially proven, the claim for the milk tea is in official records!
Yuenyeung Around the World
In the summer of 2010, a big coffee chain called Starbucks offered a special Yuenyeung drink. You could find it in their stores in Hong Kong and Macau. It was a frozen, blended version called the "Yuen Yeung Frappuccino Blended Cream."
Yuenyeung for Kids
There's a special version of Yuenyeung just for kids! It's called "children's yuenyeung" (兒童鴛鴦). This version is caffeine-free, so it won't make kids jumpy. Instead of coffee and tea, it's made with two popular Hong Kong drinks: Horlicks and Ovaltine. You can often find this kid-friendly drink at cha chaan tengs too.
