Early Life and Career

Yūko Takeuchi was born on April 1, 1980, in Urawa, Saitama, Japan. She was discovered by a talent agency during a school break in Harajuku, a popular area in Tokyo. This happened after she finished junior high school.

Family Life

Takeuchi married actor Nakamura Shidō II on May 10, 2005. They had worked together in the film Be With You. Their son was born in November 2005. The couple later divorced on February 29, 2008.

She married actor Taiki Nakabayashi on February 27, 2019. Her older son, who was in junior high at the time, reportedly encouraged her second marriage. In November 2019, she announced she was expecting another child. Her second son was born in January 2020.

Rise to Stardom

Takeuchi became very well-known for her roles in Japanese television dramas. She starred in shows like Mukodono (My Husband) and Lunch no Joō (The Queen of Lunch). In Mukodono, she played a newlywed alongside Nagase Tomoya. In Lunch no Joō, she played a girl with a secret past who loved her lunch.

She also appeared in Egao No Hōsoku and Pride. In Pride, she played the love interest of a hockey player, acted by Takuya Kimura. She also starred in NHK's Asadora TV series called Asuka.

Film Success

Takeuchi also had a successful film career. Her early movies include Hoshi Ni Negaiwo, Yomigaeri, and Be With You. Her acting in Yomigaeri (2003), Be With You (2004), and Spring Snow (2005) earned her recognition from the Japanese Academy Awards. She later won the Best Supporting Actress Award at the Japanese Academy Awards for her role in the 2014 film Cape Nostalgia.

International Roles

In 2010, Takeuchi appeared in the American science fiction TV show FlashForward. She played a character in two episodes. The director, Michael Nankin, called her "Japan's answer to Audrey Hepburn." Even though her lines were in Japanese, she wanted to learn English better to talk with the cast and crew.

In 2018, Takeuchi played the main character in the Hulu/HBO Asia series Miss Sherlock. This show was a modern version of Arthur Conan Doyle's famous Sherlock Holmes detective stories.

Passing

Yūko Takeuchi passed away on September 27, 2020, at the age of 40. She was found at her home in Shibuya, Tokyo, and was taken to the hospital, but she died shortly after.
