Yun Seondo (1587–1671), also known as Yoon Sun-Do, was an important Korean thinker, poet, and government official. He followed a philosophy called Neo-Confucianism. He was also known by his special pen names, Gosan and Haeong.

Who Was Yun Seondo?
Yun Seondo was born in Seoul, which is now the capital of South Korea. He started his career in government and was quite successful early on. However, he was a very honest person. He often spoke his mind, even if it meant criticizing powerful people at court.
Why Was He Banished?
Because of his straightforward nature, Yun Seondo made some enemies. He was sent away from the capital more than once for speaking out. He spent most of his 85 years living in his quiet country home. There, he spent his time thinking about life, teaching others, and writing beautiful poetry.
Yun Seondo's Poetry
Yun Seondo is considered one of the greatest masters of a special Korean poetry style called sijo. A sijo is a short, three-line poem. His most famous work is The Fisherman's Calendar. This is a collection of forty sijo poems, with ten poems for each season of the year.
The Meaning of the Fisherman
In both Chinese and Korean traditional poetry, a fisherman often represents a wise person. This person lives a simple life, close to nature. In art, fishermen were often shown in sets of four paintings, one for each season.
Yun Seondo combined these ideas in The Fisherman's Calendar. It is the longest and most detailed sijo collection written during his time.
