Yunyarinyi is a special place in South Australia where Aboriginal people live. It's known as an Aboriginal homeland. This community is located on the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands, often called the APY Lands.

Yunyarinyi is about 45 kilometers (28 miles) south of the border with the Northern Territory. It's also about 320 kilometers (200 miles) south of a bigger city called Alice Springs.

Discovering Yunyarinyi

Yunyarinyi is a small community in the remote areas of South Australia. It is a place where the local Aboriginal people, the Aṉangu, live and connect with their traditional lands.

Where is Yunyarinyi?

Yunyarinyi is located in the northern part of South Australia. It's quite close to the border with the Northern Territory. If you were to travel directly south from Alice Springs, it would be about 320 kilometers away. It's also only about 40 kilometers from a larger community called Pukatja.

The number of people living in Yunyarinyi changes, but it's usually around 50 residents. Many children live there, making it a lively place. People often travel to Pukatja to use the shops and other services.

A Bit of History

Yunyarinyi wasn't always an Aboriginal homeland. It actually started out as a place where cattle were raised, called Kenmore Park.

Things changed in 1981. That year, a special law was passed called the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Land Rights Act 1981. This law gave the Aṉangu people legal ownership and control over their traditional lands. Because of this important law, Kenmore Park officially became an Indigenous community, a homeland for the Aṉangu people.

Time for a Change

Have you ever noticed that different parts of Australia have different time zones? Yunyarinyi and the rest of the APY Lands have a unique time zone.

Even though they are in South Australia, they don't follow the same time as the rest of the state. This is because they have strong connections to the Northern Territory and are very close to its border. So, the APY Lands follow Australian Central Standard Time (UTC+9:30) all year round. This is the same time zone as Darwin, not Adelaide. This means they don't change their clocks for daylight saving time, unlike most of South Australia.

What's in Yunyarinyi?

Even though Yunyarinyi is a small community, it has some important facilities for its residents.

  • School: The Kenmore Park Anangu School is there for the children. It teaches students from when they are very young (birth) all the way up to Year 12.
  • Community Hub: There is a central community building. It has a shared kitchen where people can cook together.
  • Office: A community office helps manage the daily life of the homeland.
  • Garage: There's a local garage, which is a repair shop, to help with vehicles.
  • Garden: The community also has a garden patch where they can grow plants.
