Yuri Nikolaevich Arabov (Russian: Юрий Николаевич Арабов) was a talented Russian writer, poet, and teacher. He was born on October 25, 1954, and passed away on December 27, 2023. Yuri Arabov was most famous for working closely with film director Alexander Sokurov for many years. He was also recognized as an Honored Artist of the Russian Federation in 1999.

About Yuri Arabov

Yuri Arabov was born in Moscow, a big city in Russia. His family had both Russian and Greek roots. His parents separated when he was five years old. Yuri was raised by his mother. She was part of the Greek community living in Crimea. In 1937, his mother moved to Moscow to study filmmaking. She learned from a famous director named Sergei Eisenstein. Later, she worked at the Gorky Film Studio. She helped direct movies and also worked on dubbing films. Dubbing is when you change the spoken language in a movie to another language.

Early Life and Education

When Yuri was a child, he sometimes helped with film dubbing. After finishing school, he thought about becoming an Orthodox priest. But then he decided to follow his mother's path. He joined screenwriting classes at VGIK. This is a famous film school in Russia. He finished his studies in 1980.

While at VGIK, he met Alexander Sokurov. They became close friends and worked together often. They made 12 feature films together over the years.

Working with Alexander Sokurov

Yuri Arabov and Alexander Sokurov made their first movie, The Lonely Voice of Man, in 1978. Even though another famous director, Andrei Tarkovsky, liked it, the movie was banned. It was called "a propaganda of Russian idealism". This meant it was seen as promoting certain ideas too strongly. The film was not released for nine years. It finally came out in 1987.

Their next film, Mournful Unconcern, also faced delays. It was finished in 1983 but released in 1987. This movie was nominated for the Golden Bear award. This is a big award at the Berlin International Film Festival.

After these early challenges, Sokurov and Arabov created many popular movies. Some of their most famous works are part of a group called the "tetralogy of power." A tetralogy is a series of four works. These films are:

  • Moloch (1999)
  • Taurus (2001)
  • The Sun (2005)
  • Faust (2011)

The film Faust won the Golden Lion award. This is the top prize at the Venice International Film Festival.

Awards and Recognition

Yuri Arabov won several awards for his screenplays. For his work on Moloch, he received the Best Screenplay Award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1999. He also won the Best Script award from the Russian Guild of Film Critics that same year.

His screenplay for Taurus also won awards. It received the Best Script award from the Russian Guild of Film Critics in 2001. It also won a Nika Award in 2002. The Nika Award is like the Russian equivalent of the Academy Awards. He won Nika Awards for The Sun and Faust too. He also won a Nika Award for A Room and a Half. This film was about the famous poet Joseph Brodsky.

Other Works and Teaching

Yuri Arabov wrote more than 30 screenplays. These were for both movies and TV shows. Besides Alexander Sokurov, he often worked with directors Aleksandr Proshkin and his son Andrei Proshkin.

Starting in 1992, Yuri Arabov also taught at the VGIK. He was the head of the Screenwriting Faculty there until he passed away.

Arabov also wrote several novels. These include Big-Beat (2003), Wonder (2009), Orlean (2011), and A Butterfly Encounter (2014). He also published several books of poetry.

Yuri Arabov passed away on December 27, 2023, at the age of 69.
