Yuta Minami (南 雄太, Minami Yūta, born 30 September 1979) is a Japanese football player. He is famous for being a goalkeeper for several teams in Japan. He played for Omiya Ardija until 2023.

Yuta Minami's Club Journey

Yuta Minami was born in Kawasaki, Japan, on September 30, 1979. After finishing high school at Shizuoka Gakuen High School, he started his professional football career.

Starting with Kashiwa Reysol

In 1998, Yuta joined Kashiwa Reysol, a team in the top Japanese league, J1 League. He quickly became their main goalkeeper during his first season. He helped Kashiwa Reysol achieve good results, including finishing third in the league in 1999 and 2000. Yuta was the team's regular goalkeeper until 2008. In 2005, Kashiwa Reysol was moved down to the J2 League, but they quickly returned to J1 in 2007. By 2008, Yuta started playing less as a new goalkeeper joined the team. In 2009, he did not play any league matches, and Kashiwa Reysol was moved down to J2 again.

Moving to New Teams

In 2010, Yuta Minami moved to Roasso Kumamoto, another team in the J2 League. He was their main goalkeeper for four seasons until 2013. After that, in 2014, he joined Yokohama FC, also in the J2 League. He played for Yokohama FC until 2021. Later in 2021, he went on loan to Omiya Ardija and then joined them permanently in 2022, playing there until 2023.

Playing for Japan's Youth Team

Yuta Minami also represented his country. In June 1997, while still in high school, he was chosen to play for the Japan U-20 national team. He played in the 1997 FIFA World Youth Championship. In April 1999, he was selected again for the 1999 FIFA World Youth Championship. In this tournament, he played every minute of all seven matches, helping Japan reach the final and finish in second place.

A Memorable Own Goal

On May 22, 2004, Yuta Minami had a very unusual moment during a J. League match against Sanfrecce Hiroshima. As a goalkeeper, he caught the ball and intended to throw it to a teammate. However, he paused for a moment and accidentally threw the ball backward into his own net! His teammates at Kashiwa Reysol were very surprised. Even though it was a rare own goal, it didn't change the final score much, as Kashiwa Reysol lost the game 3-0. This moment is still remembered as one of the most unique own goals in football history.
