History of Zabcikville
How Zabcikville Got Its Name
The community of Zabcikville is named after the Zabcik (pronounced ZAHB-chik) family. They were immigrants who came to Texas in 1855 from a place called Ratiboř in the Czech Republic. At that time, Ratiboř was part of the Austrian Empire.
Early Days and Name Change
Zabcikville was first settled by people of Czech heritage in the late 1800s. It was originally called Marekville. This name came from the Marek family, who owned stores there. Later, the Zabcik family married into the Marek family. The Zabciks then took over the family store. Because of this, the community's name was changed to Zabcikville.
Population Changes Over Time
In 1940, Zabcikville had about 60 residents and three businesses. By 1949, the population grew to 80 people, and there was one more business. However, the number of people living there slowly went down during the rest of the 20th century. From 1990 to 2000, the population was around 38. The local store with the Zabcikville sign was still open back then. Today, a sign for the community stands above a gas station.
