Zearing's Story: How It Began
Zearing was created from an area called Lincoln Township. It was officially started on October 17, 1881. Then, it became an official city on February 6, 1883. The city got its name from William Mitchell Zearing. He was a judge from Chicago who gave a bell to the very first church in the community.

Fun in Zearing: Festivals and Horses
Zearing has a special event called the Zearing Days Celebration. It happens every year during the last weekend of July. This festival used to celebrate Labor Day but stopped in the 1980s. Then, in 2000, some people in Zearing decided to bring it back!
The first new celebration was called "Just Horsin' Around." It honored Dick Sparrow, who was famous for his team of 40 horses. What started as a one-day event in July has now grown into a three-day festival!
Zearing is also known for its history with horse trainers. Besides the Sparrow family, other famous horse trainers like Verne Matson, Eric Brown, and Dean Johnston lived in Zearing. They were all very skilled with large draft horse teams.
Learning in Zearing: Schools
Zearing is part of the Colo–NESCO Community School District. This school district was formed on July 1, 1991. It combined the Colo and NESCO school districts. NESCO stood for Northeast Story County, and it served Zearing and McCallsburg.
The school building in Zearing is where the elementary students go. This includes grades Kindergarten through 4th grade. The main office for the school district is in Colo. The high school, for grades 5 through 12, is also located in Colo.
