Zeinab Elobeid Yousif (born 1952, died 2016) was an amazing Sudanese aircraft engineer. She was the first Sudanese woman to get a special license from the Civil Aviation Authority in the United Kingdom. This license allowed her to work on airplanes.
Zeinab worked for Sudan Airways for many years, from 1973 to 1992. After that, she moved to the United Kingdom. She was an expert in electronics, especially in how planes communicate, navigate, and use radar. She worked on many different types of aircraft, like the Boeing 707, Boeing 737, Fokker 50, and Fokker F.27. Later, in the UK, she also worked on planes like the Cessna 402 and Beechcraft 1900.
Early Life and Education
Zeinab Elobeid Yousif was born in Khartoum, Sudan, on June 13, 1952. She was the oldest daughter in her family. Her father, Elobeid Yousif Ahmed Shidwan, was a well-known businessman.
Zeinab grew up in a village called Oum Dawwaban. This village was famous for its religious school where boys from all over Sudan and Africa came to learn classical Arabic and study the Quran.
When Zeinab was young in the 1960s, it was unusual for women in Sudan to study and work in technical fields like engineering. But her father really encouraged her to pursue her dreams. Thanks to his support, Zeinab finished high school. She then studied electronic engineering at Khartoum Polytechnic from 1970 to 1973. This school is now known as the University of Science and Technology.
Becoming an Aircraft Engineer
Zeinab started her career as an aircraft engineer at Sudan Airways. She worked in the radio workshop, helping to fix and maintain airplane communication systems.
To become even better at her job, she went to the UK. From 1983 to 1986, she studied Avionics and Aerospace Engineering at Brunel Technical College in Bristol. It was there that she earned her special license from the Civil Aviation Authority. This license showed she was qualified to work on aircraft.
In the 1990s, Zeinab continued her education. She earned a Master of Science degree in Advanced Manufacturing Systems from Kingston University in London. Zeinab Elobeid Yousif was a true pioneer, opening doors for many women in engineering and aviation!
