Zelzate is a town in Belgium. It is located in the East Flanders province. A province is like a large region within a country. In 2021, about 13,124 people lived in Zelzate. The town covers an area of 13.71 square kilometers.
About Zelzate
Zelzate is unique because it is split into two parts. A large waterway called the Ghent–Terneuzen Canal runs right through the middle of the town. To connect the two sides, there is a concrete drawbridge and a tunnel.
Industry and Environment
Zelzate is known for the factories and industries nearby. In the past, these industries caused a lot of air pollution. This meant Zelzate had some of the lowest air quality in Belgium. However, a big company called ArcelorMittal Ghent recently made a major investment. This helped them reduce their pollution by 90%. This is great news for the air quality in Zelzate!
