Zheng Shouren (Chinese: 郑守仁; pinyin: Zhèng Shǒurén; January 30, 1940 – July 24, 2020) was a very important Chinese engineer. He was the main designer for the massive Three Gorges Dam. For many years, he worked on planning and designing big water projects in the Yangtze River area. He also shared his knowledge by writing over 60 papers and several books.
About Zheng Shouren
Zheng Shouren was born in Yingshang County, Anhui, China, on January 30, 1940. He studied at East China University of Water Resources, which is now called Hohai University. He graduated in September 1963.
After college, he started working at the Yangtze River Basin Planning Office. He was promoted to deputy chief engineer in 1991. Later, in 1994, he became the chief engineer. His most famous role was being the chief designer of the Three Gorges Dam. Zheng Shouren passed away in Wuhan, Hubei, on July 24, 2020.
His Engineering Work
Zheng Shouren helped design many big water projects. He worked on the Lushui Hydropower Project in Hubei. He also contributed to the Wujiangdu Hydropower Project in Guizhou.
He was involved in the Yangtze River Gezhouba Hydropower project. For this project, he was in charge of designing how the river would be closed off and how the temporary dams (called cofferdams) would be built. He also led the designs for the Qingjiang Geheyan Hydropower Project. Most importantly, he played a key role in the design of the huge Three Gorges Dam.

Zheng Shouren wrote many books about his work. These books share important information about water resources and engineering. One of his books is titled Flood Resources Utilization in the Yangtze River Basin. He also wrote books about the Three Gorges Dam project and the Gezhouba Dam.
Awards and Recognition
Zheng Shouren received many important awards for his work. These awards show how much his contributions were valued.
- 1997: He became a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). This is a very high honor for engineers in China.
- 1997: He received the State Science and Technology Progress Award (First Class).
- 2004: He won the Science and Technology Progress Award from the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation.
- 2017: He was given the ICOLD Award.
- 2019: He received the State Science and Technology Progress Award (Special Award).
