Who Was Zig Ziglar?
His Early Life
Zig Ziglar was born in Coffee County, Alabama. He was the tenth of 12 children in his family. His parents were John Silas Ziglar and Lila Wescott Ziglar.
When Ziglar was five years old, his family moved to Yazoo City, Mississippi. This is where he spent most of his childhood. Sadly, his father died the next year. His younger sister also passed away just two days later.
From 1943 to 1945, Ziglar was part of a special Navy program. He studied at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina.
His Career as a Speaker
Ziglar left college in 1947. He moved to Lancaster, South Carolina. There, he started working as a salesman for a company called WearEver Cookware. He was very good at his job. By 1950, he became a manager.
While working, Ziglar became very interested in self-help and inspiring others. He started giving his own speeches. In 1963, he helped start a company called American Salesmasters. This company wanted to make salespeople look better. They did this by holding seminars.
These seminars were held in many cities. Famous speakers like Norman Vincent Peale joined Ziglar. They taught people how to be better at selling. The audiences included many different types of business people.
Ziglar also became a main trainer for Mary Kay Cosmetics. In 1968, he moved to Dallas, Texas. He became a vice president for another company. Later, he started his own company, Ziglar, Inc. He also wrote more than 30 books.
In 2007, Ziglar had an accident. He fell down stairs and had trouble remembering things. But he kept giving motivational talks until he retired in 2010.
