Zotovia is a special group of plants that belong to the grass family. These unique grasses are found only in New Zealand, including the small, faraway Antipodes Islands.
About Zotovia Grasses
Zotovia grasses are native, meaning they naturally grow in New Zealand and nowhere else in the world. They are an important part of New Zealand's natural plant life. Like all grasses, they have long, narrow leaves and produce small flowers that are often pollinated by the wind.
Naming the Genus
The name Zotovia was given to these grasses to honor a famous botanist named Victor Dmitrievich Zotov. He was born in Vladivostok in 1908 and later moved to New Zealand in 1924. Victor Zotov spent many years studying plants, especially grasses, in New Zealand. He helped us learn a lot about the country's amazing plant life. He passed away in 1977.
Different Types of Zotovia Grasses
There are three known types, or species, of Zotovia grasses. Each one grows in specific parts of New Zealand:
- Zotovia acicularis - This type of Zotovia grass is found on the South Island of New Zealand.
- Zotovia colensoi - You can find this species on both the North Island and the South Island of New Zealand.
- Zotovia thomsonii - This grass grows on the South Island and also on the Antipodes Islands.
