Fires and Community Spirit
Zurich faced challenges from fires in the early 1900s. In 1918, a large fire destroyed most of the businesses on the west side of Main Street. Just three years later, another fire damaged the post office, a creamery, and a store at the north end of Main Street.
Despite these setbacks, the community showed great spirit. In the 1920s, a popular saying in Zurich was "Zurich It’s Never Idle." This phrase was even displayed on car radiators. It was later used as the slogan for Zurich's centennial celebration in 1980.
The post office in Zurich eventually closed in 1996.
