Zvonimir "Zvonko" Vujin (born July 23, 1943 – died December 8, 2019) was a famous Serbian boxer. He was an amateur boxer, meaning he didn't get paid to fight. Zvonko was really good at boxing! He proudly represented Yugoslavia in two Olympic Games, winning a bronze medal each time. He also won a silver medal at the European championships and a gold medal at the Mediterranean Games in 1967. Zvonko passed away in his hometown of Zrenjanin, Serbia.

Zvonko's Olympic Journey

Zvonko Vujin was known for his strong performances in the Olympic Games. He competed twice and earned a bronze medal both times. This shows how consistent and talented he was as a boxer.

Mexico City Olympics: 1968

At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, Zvonimir Vujin competed as a lightweight boxer (meaning he weighed up to 60 kg). He showed great skill throughout the competition.

  • First Fight: Zvonko didn't have to fight in the first round (Round of 64). This is called a "bye."
  • Second Fight: He won against Peter Rieger from East Germany. The judges decided he won by a score of 3-2.
  • Third Fight: Zvonko then beat Valery Belousov from the Soviet Union. This time, all five judges agreed he won, making the score 5-0.
  • Quarterfinal: He continued his winning streak by defeating Luis Minami from Peru with another 5-0 decision.
  • Semifinal: In the semifinal, Zvonko faced Josef Grudzien from Poland. He lost this fight by a score of 0-5. Even though he lost the semifinal, he was still awarded a bronze medal because both semifinal losers receive bronze in boxing.

Munich Olympics: 1972

Zvonko Vujin returned to the Olympics in 1972, competing in Munich, Germany. This time, he was in the light welterweight category (up to 63.5 kg). He once again proved he was one of the best boxers.

  • First Fight: In the Round of 32, Zvonko won against Robert Mwakosya from Tanzania. He won by a "Technical Knockout" (TKO) in the second round. A TKO happens when the referee stops the fight because one boxer can't safely continue.
  • Second Fight: He then won a close fight against Sodnom Gombo from Mongolia, with the judges scoring it 3-2 in his favor.
  • Quarterfinal: Zvonko had a strong win against Graham Moughton from Great Britain, with all five judges scoring it 5-0 for him.
  • Semifinal: In the semifinal, he fought Ray Seales from the United States. Zvonko lost this match by a 0-5 decision. Just like in 1968, he was awarded a bronze medal for reaching the semifinals.

Other Achievements

Besides his Olympic medals, Zvonko Vujin also won medals in other important boxing events.

  • In 1967, he won a silver medal at the European Amateur Boxing Championships held in Rome, Italy.
  • He also competed in the Mediterranean Games. In 1963, he won a bronze medal in Naples, and in 1967, he won a gold medal in Tunis!

Zvonimir Vujin was a truly dedicated and successful boxer who made his country proud.
