Ælfwine of Warwick was an important person in England long ago. He was a Sheriff of Warwickshire, which was like a main law enforcer and manager for the king in that area. He worked under William the Conqueror, who became King of England after the Norman Conquest in 1066. Ælfwine was special because he was one of the few Anglo-Saxons who got to keep their land after the Normans took over. He passed away sometime before the year 1087.

Ælfwine's Family Background

Ælfwine came from an important family. His mother was named Erminhild de Warwick. His father was Wigod de Wallingford, who was an Earl of Wallington. An Earl was a high-ranking noble. Wigod was also a descendant of famous historical figures like Egbert III of England and Charles Martel, a powerful leader from a very long time ago.

His Wife and Children

Ælfwine's wife was named Horne. They had three children:

  • Turchill of Kinsbury de Warwick: He was also known as Thorkell of Arden. Turchill became a knight and an Earl of Warwickshire, just like his grandfather. He married a woman named Leverunia. Turchill was the founder of the important Arden family in Warwickshire. He owned many estates, holding 52 lordships in Warwickshire. He died around the year 1080.
  • Leofstan
  • Gudmund

Ælfwine also had a sister named Ealdgyth. She married Robert d'Oilly, who later took over Ælfwine's job as Sheriff.

Lands and Property

Ælfwine owned a large estate called Ryton-on-Dunsmore. This estate was measured at about 3½ hides, which was an old way to measure land, usually enough to support one family. The estate also included a woodland area and a mill. A mill was very important back then for grinding grain into flour.

Ælfwine was also a supporter of Coventry Abbey, which was a large and important church and monastery. He likely gave money or land to help support it.
